Different types of windows

Windows are usually classified according to the way in which they open. Here are a few more popular types of windows available on the market today.

Casement Windows -- these are windows with a hinged sash that swings in or out like a door. They can be hung from the side, top or bottom.

Bay Windows -- these are windows normally found in Victorian properties. They project outwards from the main walls of a house. They can be square or polygonal in shape. Bay windows can provide much-needed extra space in a compact room.

Fixed Windows -- these are normally plain pieces of glass with fixed panes which cannot be opened or closed. Their purpose is decorative and to allow sunlight to filter through.

Sliding Sash Windows -- there are horizontal sliders which move along tracks from left to right or vertical sliders which move up and down. Lead weights are attached to each moving window using a system of cords and pulleys to stop the windows from slipping.

Pivoting Windows -- these are fixed on central pivoting hinges and can be swung almost through 360 degrees. They are perfect for tall buildings as they allow the windows to be cleaned from inside. An example of this are roof windows such as skylights.

Tilt & Turn Windows
-- these flexible windows can be either tilted open or swung open making them good for ventilation and easy to clean.

Common reasons for window damage and repair

If you have glass window panes, these can be accidentally broken or deliberately damaged by, for example, vandals or burglars. If the glass does break, do not try to replace it yourself. Use the services of a professional glazier. To avoid having to bear the cost of any damage done to your windows, make sure you have the appropriate cover on your Home Insurance policy.

Nowadays, many windows are made from UPVC which cannot be broken. However, other types of damage can occur such as damage to the wood around the window or mould damage caused by condensation.

To control damage caused by condensation, you either have to reduce the moisture in the room or increase the temperature to ensure the room is warm enough to prevent condensation from forming. You can also use a dehumidifier and ventilate your rooms regularly.

Make the effort to properly wash the exterior frames of your windows at least twice a year. It is also worth cleaning around the window edges and corners, removing any dirt, insects and leaves.
